Iowa State University recently received a $10 million grant for research towards sequencing the swine genome. The purpose of the project is to “improve swine health and to increase the efficiency of swine production.”

“The project will lead to the development of new DNA-based tools to identify and select genetically superior pigs that resist infectious diseases, yield larger litter sizes and produce leaner cuts of meat for consumers.”

I’m not sure it’s possible to make bacon any better, but if they can find a way then more power to them. I can’t think of a better way to spend my tax dollars!

Thanks to fellow blogger Todd for the tip.
