Earlier this month, a couple of clever “Bacontrepreneurs” from Seattle launched a new product for the Bacon Nation.

Bacon Salt is a zero calorie, vegetarian, kosher certified seasoning salt that makes everything taste like real bacon.” Because as it says on the Bacon Salt label, “everything should taste like bacon.” Amen to that.

As a member of the “bacon media,” I was fortunate to receive some Bacon Salt samples. I received samples of all three of the Bacon Salt flavors currently on the market – Original, Hickory and Peppered.

I’ve been out of town for the last several days, so the contents of my refrigerator are pretty pathetic at the moment. But I was eager to sample the Bacon Salt tonight, so I scrounged around my kitchen for anything I could put it on.

My options were spaetzle, Kraft macaroni & cheese, and hashbrowns (yes, I am 33 going on 18). Mac and cheese probably would have been the best option, but I wasn’t very hungry and didn’t want to fire up an entire box tonight. So I’ll have to try that later this week. The hashbrowns were an obvious choice because they are a breakfast food and bacon is the king of breakfast meats. I also chose the spaetzle because it is one of my favorite things to eat (I realize it is odd for spaetzle to be one of my favorite foods…it can only be explained by the German blood coursing through my veins). I often eat spaetzle with just butter and salt. So it made sense to substitute regular salt with Bacon Salt.

I cut the hashbrown into three pieces, one for each salt flavor. While there are no meat products in the salt, it truly does smell like bacon. The taste is also quite authentic. It is also quite strong – you only need a little bit of salt to get the desired bacon effect. Of the three flavors, my favorite on the hashbrowns was the hickory flavor.

I added the peppered flavor to the spaetzle. I think it would have tasted better if I had also put some cheese on the spaetzle, but nonetheless it really did make the spaetzle taste like bacon.

My sense is that bacon salt would also be good on vegetables, french fries, and hamburgers, amongst other things. While it is no substitute for the real thing – because nothing can replace a slice of bacon as far as I’m concerned – it does truly add the taste of bacon to whatever you put it on.

Bacon Salt is an especially fantastic invention for vegetarians who still have a hard time resisting the smell and taste of bacon. Women can also toss a Bacon Salt shaker in their purse and have the taste of bacon at their fingertips for any dining situation. No matter what, Bacon Salt is a product that any bacon lover should have in their spice rack.
