As I mentioned last week, I recently moved to a new apartment in DC. Moving generally sucks, but the worst thing about moving is that very little about your life is “normal” while you’re in transition. Particularly when it comes to meals – until you find all of your equipment and have the new kitchen in order, meals become a matter of convenience rather than pleasure. As a result, I’ve eaten way too much takeout and fast food in the last two weeks. I finished moving the remainder of my stuff to the new apartment last night, so when I woke up this morning I was really looking forward to firing up the kitchen and making home-cooked meals while working from home.

One of the best things about my new apartment is that it is on the same block as a Trader Joe’s. So after a quick trip to the store, I started out by making butternut squash soup for lunch. And then this afternoon I put some bacon cheddar bread in the “oven” (aka bread machine) and it is baking right now. The aroma it will generate over the next couple hours will introduce my corner of the building to the scent of bacon that they will come to know quite well living next door to me. I’m still debating what to have for dinner, but I found some pork pâté at the grocery store and am thinking of making pâté en croute.

I even bought a “Christmas tree” to make the apartment feel more like home (aka a rosemary bush that has been manicured into a cone-like shape that is supposed to resemble a Christmas tree – hey, it’s much more low maintenance and apartment-friendly than a normal Christmas tree).

I’m just happy to finally be settled once again.
